Sylvia Contreras

Sylvia Contreras grew up in Compton, California, where her mother worked as a book binder, her father worked in the flower district, and her step-father worked in the steel industry. She attended Jefferson Elementary School, Bunche Junior High School, and Dominquez High School, all in Compton.

Sylvia’s higher education experience consisted of Compton Junior College (Associate Degree in Word Processing), 1988; California State University, Long-Beach (B.A. in English Literature), 1992; and an M.L.I.S. from the University of Iowa, 1994.

Before becoming a professional librarian, Sylvia worked at the Willowbrook Public Library in Compton, CA, and the libraries at Compton Junior College and California State University, Long Beach. As a professional librarian, Sylvia worked at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, Ebling Medical Library at the University of Wisconsin Madison, and she was the Director of the Oscar Rennebohm Library at Edgewood College from 2004 to 2017. In early 2018, Sylvia was appointed University Librarian at Holy Names University in Oakland, California.
